Spike - I play by ear - tried to learn to sight read many times, but I just can't seem to make the connection between a dot on a page & a note on a keyboard! As for multi-tracking, it varies depending on the song, but yes as a rule I record a basic rhythm track first, then add the other bits, usually working on a section of a few bars at a time.
