Default Pipes & drums - 04-01-2013, 04:35 PM

There is a distinct absence of realistic bagpipes on modern keyboards so I have set about trying to emulate the pipes and drums.
I have bought a soundset called Celtic Pipes for the Motif as this had the best pipes I've heard yet but they still weren't perfect.
One problem for me is that the bagpipes are tuned to A and the notes can only be played in one octave from G3 to B4, not my best key. 2nd problem was the drones were also in A.
After a bit of experimenting I think Iíve cracked it on this particular performance. only Motif players will understand this bit!
I loaded Performance USER 3 014(A14) 5 Pipers
Voice 1 is the Drone A/A#
Went to F2 Voice
Changed Voice 1 to 012(A12) Drone C/D. This sounds an octave too low for a drone so turn knob AS1 to +63. This now plays drone C at the right level.
Pressed Store/Enter/Yes then [Save]
This performance can now be played live in C with a C Drone and thatís how it records in song mode too.
I now had to make a drum track, this was achieved by recording a performance in Pattern mode so that I made an intro just using a bass drum and a snare roll for two measures. This gave me a Pattern Section. Another pattern was made for the main drumming using the bass drum and snare. If you hold the snare note down you get a roll so another pattern Section was made by recording this in real time. I now chained both these pattern Sections together to form the drums.
Now having sorted the pipes and drum sounds I connected the Motif to the PC using the Tascam audio interface which once set up was routed into Cubase LE5.
I recorded a track of the drums by just playing the chained sections of the patterns in the Motif, made sure the track was long enough to end after the pipes.
The next track to be recorded was the drones. This was just a case of holding the drones notes the same length as the drums.
The melody track came next, with the drums and drones playing in the background the melody track was recorded.
All the tracks were now chopped for the correct length and a fade-in applied to the drone track.
It didn't sound too bad but needed a bit more depth so I duplicated the melody track and then delayed it about 1/10 sec, panned one to the right and one to the left. Gave one melody track some autopan too plus a bit of reverb.
Finally I Copied a bass drum sound from the drum track and pasted it into a new track to give the end signal for the drums.
Finally the mix was altered to give the end result.
If I were to want a full pipeband sound I would be duplicating tracks further and tweaking them for the effect - this was just an experiment to see if it could be done in just audio. 1 1/2 days work.
Would be grateful for any comments or questions

Hi Spike,

I am a new member, and have just come across your posting. Wonderful pipe sound and drum as well. Great work. I wonder if it is possible to have a copy of the voice to try it on my keyboard?

Regards

Paul

Hi Paul
Welcome to the forum.
The PC on which I do all my music is awaiting a new power supply, as soon as I'm able to I'll sort something out for you.
The voice you hear on this recording is a combination of bagpipe voices which are on different tracks of the recording and are timed different to give a spread of the sound. This can't be replicated in just one sound. It may be that I have to go to my Motif and give you one note of the finished song (without the drums) so you can sample it and then save to your custom voices. The drone however could not be included because it has to be the same note all the time.
I did Highland Cathedral by the same method and you could sample the voices in that but the drone is the problem again.
I'm presuming you can sample audio with the T5.
I'll come back to you when the PC is running again.
If you have Cubase or Sonar you could do what I did for the original song.
Cheers
Spike

Hi Spike,

Whatever you did, the bagpipe just sounded wonderful. It must be the best bagpipe sound I've heard from any keyboards.

I eagerly await to see what you can come up for me.

Thanks again.

Hi Paul
Sorry it's took so long but I've now got the repaired PC back.
Here's 3 short MP3s for you with the drone sound, the pipe sound and then both together. You may be able to sample from these.
Cheers

Hi Spike,

Nice to know you've got your PC back in working order.
Cheers for the samples.
