Default Shocking Discovery - 12-01-2016, 12:55 PM

Am I alone in discovering that many venues are inadequately electrically grounded? I set up my equipment (keyboard, amp, mics) in as many as 15 different locations each month and have accidentally found sound "snaps" and felt light little shocks from my microphone. I now use a ground detecting devise before plugging in but even in the same building, some are and some aren't grounded.
I'm curious of the probable consequences and the best corrections to assure that I make a safe setup. I'm most interested in what liability is mine if others use my equipment connected to an ungrounded electrical source.

Hello, Dick.

I have been thinking about it, and would like to add that if you're getting shocked in so many different places, you might have a problem in your equipment. Have that checked out, it may get worse. Just a thought.......

Thanks for the reply. Your observation echoes with common sense logic.
The reason for my post is because I did learn of many ungrounded receptacles, especially in older buildings. I focus on entertaining an older population who are usually found in older buildings. I purchased an inexpensive tester that simply plug in and identifies ungrounded outlets. I have added a GFI to my primary connection, but I wanted to question if I am the only one making these discoveries. Aside from personal safety, many dollars worth of equipment is at risk and few carry insurance on the equipment brought in by others.
Adding to the dilemma are ungrounded extension cords provided to "reach" from remote sources.

Tyros 4, Mackie 450v2's, Yamaha Mixer for solo gigs. Play in Gospel blues band and use Roland KC550 or 350 and/or run direct box into PA.

I ran into a problem where the polarity was switched on one outlet and not another. Since I plugged some equipment into each it blew my output board in my Tyros 5. Now our band uses a plug in tester at each gig to be sure all outlets are correct and the same. The testers are cheap and can save you hundreds of dollars.

If I could do what a REAL harmonica player can do, I wouldn't need a keyboard but it would shock others. Lone Ranger fans should relate to what this amazing individual can do to remind us of "The Lone Ranger" Hi! Ho!! Silver
Enjoy...remember

A harmonica in Carnegie Hall.
