Default Introduction - 16-02-2009, 04:31 PM

Hi:

I just joined the group today. My first keyboard purchase was just about 10 months ago. Until then I played Tenor Sax for many years. Always wanted to play piano and finally got a PSR-S500 Arranger. It's been an exciting year as I have practised every day and while I certainly have an enormous amount to learn I have progressed to a point where I can play just about any pop tune for which I have music as long as I play it slowly. Anyway having a great time.

Hi jfr

Welcome, and thanks for dropping by to say hello.

I'd love to hear your opinion on the onboard sax sounds of the S500. I think sax is one of the instruments that lends itself nicely to being played on a keyboard, and can sound quite convincing. Would be interesting to hear your views.

Best regards

Paul

Hi Guys.

Thanks for the Welcome. My name is Joe

The onboard Tenor Sax on the Yamaha is fine but the Alto voices are not realistic to my ears. The Soprano sax is very good. I've listened to the PSR-S900 and Tyros 2 and they have a number of excellent Tenor sax voices but they as well as the Tyros 3 have the same terrible Alto Sax. I will say that the 900, T2 and T3 have the best Sax Section voices I've ever heard. Very realistic. The 500 has really none.

Right now I am totally confused on what I should upgrade to:

Tyros 3
Korg PA2X Pro

I've been able to demo a the Korg PA800 and I like the sound and really love the Styles much better than what I am use to on the Yamaha. However I have not had an opportunity to see, play either the Tyros 3 or the PA2x Pro.

Hi Joe,

I can only speak for the Tyros 2 but do agree, the Alto Sax is not that great. I find it weak & weedy and have never been able to use it.

There's a super articulation Tenor Sax on the T2 that is very good, and very playable in many situations. One of my efforts where I've used the SA Sax is: Late Night Chill which will give you a rough idea on how it sounds on the T2.

One of the members, John Wyvern, has done an excellent 'tweak' of the Tyros 2 Tenor Sax. I've not had a chance to use it yet on a tune, but I've heard it and it does sound impressive. I'm sure one of us here can dig it out if you're interested. I don't think it's an SA voice, so I'm presuming it will work on your keyboard.

Cheers

Paul
