Wink New Member Introduction - 16-03-2009, 02:09 PM

Hi All,

Just a quick piece about myself and what I hope to gain from the forum etc.

Name is Simon, and I have been playing since I was around 8. I have always been facinated with the whole 'music technology' thing.

Most of my work has been sequencing on Sonar to various midi modules, but I found that I needed to produce a large quantity on music as quickly as I could - so, I bought a Yamaha S-900. -I love it !!!

The majority of my music is for children to dance to in competitions and festivals. Its Stage/Theatre dance as opposed to Hip-Hop and that kind of stuff.

I have recently made a website selling music for dancing schools, and even more recently been granted a licence to sell 'familiar music'. Perviously I have only been licensed to sell 'original compositions'. If anyone is interested I can give more information on licenses - I've been doing a lot of homework on that recently.

What do I hope to gain from this forum ?
Well, I am actually hoping to build relationships with anyone who wishes to sell their music on my site. My ultimate goal is to build a network of like minded people who produce good quality music which would be suitable for my customers. I will obviously pay contributors for their music - hopefully on a royalty basis (I'll submit another post on this topic for those who are interested (as long as it doesn't go against the forum rules - I haven't checked yet).

Well, thats about it for now - if you have read this far then its nice meeting you.

Simon

Hi Simon
I sounds to me like you can make a great contribution to this forum with your knowledge of sequencing, so be prepared to be inundated with questions.
As far as I know it doesn't go against any forum rules for you to canvas originals from other members for your project. You can look under the 'originals' section and find the names of members who are adept(?) at composing their own songs then you can contact them privately to make your own arrangements.
I look forward to a mutually beneficial association with you.
regards
Spike

Thanks Spike - As I mentioned, I am now licensed to sell anything - not just originals so anyone who is competent enough can have a go even if they dont posess compositional skills.

As far as sequencing questions go I an reasonably good with most things so if I can be of any help then that would be great.

Hi Simon

Welcome to the forum!

Sounds like you've found a very interesting niche with the music for dance etc. I hadn't realised you can get a licence for producing 'familiar music' so would like to learn a little more about this aspect, purely from a curiosity point of view. Is it the PRS who 'manage' this side of things?

Re: your message above. Please feel free to post information/links to your site etc. about your project. (Info & links in your signature are also most welcome).

I'm sure there are quite a few here who'd like to get musically involved with your project, as it sounds really interesting.

Look forward to seeing more details.

Best regards,

Paul

Thanks for the welcome Paul.

As far as the licensing goes its far easier than I thought.

The license is handled by MCPS and I can legitimatly sell my own recording (as opposed to something lifted from a commercial release) and not have to declare it. It is a "carte blanche" license which I pay annually and as long as I dont make more than £6,500 I dont have to inform them of which tracks I sell.

At first I thought I wold have to buy a £1,500 license but after speaking to the MCPS I was informed that it is far more affordable

I dont really want to go into too much detail in open forum, but I am happy to give you more detil in PM if you like - I dont want too many competitors springing up

Simon

Hi Simon,

Interesting stuff. Thanks for the heads up.

By the way, I've moved your post from the Cover Songs section, (as this is purely for music uploads), to the main Workshop forum, which means the post will show directly at the top of each member's personalised home page.

I've already listened to a few of the tracks on your site, and they are excellent. Loved the piano boogie tracks and the modern rock numbers!

Hope it works out for you with the new site!

Cheers

Paul

Thanks Paul

Would you be interested in becoming a contributor to my site - Spike has already expressed an interest.

I'll be working on some kind of agreement over the next few days to provide protection to contributors and myself - I'd appreciate any comments on that when I have a Draft written.

Simon

Hi Simon,

Yep, I'm always up for trying something a bit different, so if you can use any of my stuff you're more than welcome.

Obviously, you'll want stuff of a certain level/style/genre etc., so for the benefit of all of us here it might be useful if you can state what type of music you're looking for. Do tunes have to be a certain length, with a proper ending etc.? What standard is required, e.g. does the tune have to be note perfect for instance, as with a commercial midi?

Many of the originals here can go from 1.5 minutes to over 5 minutes in length so any information you can supply will help us to submit tunes that fit your ideas.

Sounds like it could be fun though and would give many of us an added purpose to our uploads.

Cheers

Paul

Sorry Paul - I been a little busy the past couple of weeks, but I'm here to reply to you now.

I have written a document which outlines all you need to know. I dont want to put a link to it here because I dont want search engines to find it - I only want musicians to find the page and not my customers.

To recieve the full information please send a blank email to musicians@dancefestivalmusic.co.uk and you will recieve an automate response with a link to all the information you need.

If you need to know anything else please contact me.

I am really hoping that some of the members here will take up this opportunity, so if you like what you see I'd appreciate you encouraging others to join in too

Regards
S

Hi Simon,

Tried sending a blank email to your supplied link, but the autoresponder has failed to reply as yet. Don't know if any others here have tried. Just thought you should know.

Regards

Paul
