With BOX.NET, why on earth 4shared??? -
13-08-2008, 05:51 PM
Hi gang,
Just curious to see if somebody knows something I'm not aware of, because I can't figure out why so many of our members use 4shared. Maybe it's more storage or something. (Maybe I should have read Paul's thread closer???) I didn't check out all the specs on each program when I got my box.net, but I did sign up for 4 different ones at the same time!
Here's what I've noticed:
Most of the time, box.net loads fast and starts playing pretty quick once you click "play".
On the other side of the coin, every time I click on 4shared it seems to slow my computer immediately, then after a time finally comes in. Then I have to hit "download" and wait again while it tries to get me to buy their premium package. After that, when the thing finally times out, I have to click download again, and it usually takes forever for it to download and start. Very, very annoying.
To me it's very simple at this point. Until I hear good reasons to use 4shared it's like this:
box.net = fast, reliable.
4shared = slow, aggravating.
What's your take on this?

Hi
You can search and find anything at 4shared
At box.net you need to a link to a file (as far as I can find out)

Hi Joso,
What does that mean when you say you can search and find anything? I don't understand.
As far as linking to a file, I find no problem. It's so easy to link to, and it gets the music out to my friends so much quicker. I'm sure they appreciate that.
When I'm waiting, (and waiting), for 4share to download, i get aggravated, and feel like I'm being held hostage!!!
Thanx for your input Joso. Very much appreciated.

If I need a file, e.g. ABBA sheet music, I go to 4shared.com - file sharing network - free file search
Type "pdf abba" in the search box, click the button and voila!
I do not have to collect and save links to the file; I find it through the search function.
Regards
Jørgen

Hi Krazy, I totally agree with you, too many adverts, and takes an age to download, Box net every time for me,very occasionally it plays up, and then I have to use 4shared,you are like me, impatient, another nit with me is MP3's,cant stand them, some take 5 mins to download, I just get fed up and give up, you can't alter them and if you wish to play them on your keyboard you have to convert them to WAV, I much prefer Midis, I like to play along with them...Pam

Strange - I have no problems with downloading from 4shared, response time is excellent and listening to them on 4shared rather than downloading them gives a decent sound. Downloads are quite quick too. I have accounts at both sites and 4 shared is quicker to upload and navigate, file size accepted is bigger too. Less adverts on Boxnet.

Jorgen,
You may well have a point for techies such as yourself, but me, ... I'm just a simple man. I don't read sheet music, store huge files, or anything else on these programs. I wouldn't know where to begin! I use them for one purpose, and one purpose only. To get my music to whoever I want to, ... FAST! Box,net does that for me.
Pam,
Glad you agree with me. However, I am a big mp3 fan because it lets everyone know what the song should sound like, even if they don't have their keyboard with them. I believe the solution is to upload, (or link), both files, (mp3 and midi), so everyone is happy.
Spike,
I wasn't aware of the bigger file size thingy. Good point I guess, but I will never need anymore than what I am using in box.net. As for downloading, all I know is that I hit "play" on box.net and in a few seconds it's playing, whereas I'd still be waiting for the "download now" on 4share, and I've yet to see 4share go quicker than box.net
Gordon,
Box.net = "FREE" (Same as 4shared, but may upgrade if you want, WITHOUT all the advertising and waiting times!) There's no question in my mind. The obvious choice for me is Box.net. Faster AND free!

Hi Krazy
The mp3's don't have to be downloaded .. you can press the small play arrow next to the 00.00 timer and this way no waiting is involved it should play almost instantly
I like the 'related files box' on 4shared .. i often find myself surfing through the files a bit like on Youtube , i don't find the adverts a problem and my pop up blocker eliminates any popups/unders
I agree with Pam that midi's should be posted on this site along with an mp3 hosted off site with all uploads ! Maybe this should be in the forum rules ? I notice some members are just uploading mp3's without midi.
cheers
andy

By golly Andy my boy, ... you've done it!!!
I NEVER even noticed the 00 and the little arrow at the top! I just tried it and it works fine. You've just saved me from going through a lot of grief with 4shared in the future.
I will now say that one is as good as the other, or if I ever get deeper into it like Jorgen and some others of you that are much more knowledgeable than myself when it comes to this kind of thing, I may use the 4shared then.
I'm glad I started this thread. Now I've learned something! Thanx everyone, and a special thanx to Andy B!
