Default Setting up ensemble settings - 01-05-2013, 12:46 PM

Hi ..Would really like to know how to prepare a set up and a lay out to do theme songs from movies ect...I'm a good player and read music.... can use a lot of the settings on my CVP 505....(similar to Tyros 3)..I just get a bit bewildered when watching people playing the ..Batman....Superman...type themes....they make it look so easy.....is there a Midi thats set up.... of they have pre recorded certain sections to a USB memory stick...or similar type function that sets the voice sequence at bar counts or is it all done manually and stored in overlays in the 8 registration memorys...I know I can split my keyboard into 3 and control the voices with my pedals...its just knowing what instrument to call on and setting drums with the left hand chording..is there anyone who has got through programing a theme...The other thing is knowing what instrument they are calling on...I can recognize some of them but I dont have any orchestra training ..so its hard for me tell between a trumpet and fugal horn and some of the percussion instruments...love to work with someone on the same journey....dosent have to happen in 5 minutes...cheers Doug

Hi Doug
Welcome to the forum.
Without actually watching the videos you refer to it's difficult to say what method of recording is used.
However, if you are doing a long and complicated piece then if I was recording it I would set everything up in registrations, bear in mind a registration is a 'photograph' of the keyboards set up as regards voices R1,R2 etc, style , multipads and OTS plus a few more parameters. So I would split the song up into sections, set up the voices, style etc for each section then save it as a registration. While you are playing each registration you still have the option of changing style variations, OTS and multipads.
The hard part is remembering the sequence of registrations and changes within the registrations.
If you go to Youtube and watch videos by Telmo on his T4 you will see what he does live.
Having saved what you have played you can then add more tracks if necessary.
Another way would be to record it track by track (there is a topic on this in the Workshop section)
Hope this helps - come back if you need further help.
Cheers
Spike

Hi Spike .. Temlo is exactly one of the musicians I am talking about ... Mark Wilburn is another....they look like they play it straight of the keyboard using the registration presets....I realize they have a sequence every so many bars when they change ...but this would come as the more times it was played...probally had a note book with promp changes until you get used to the registrations..I will have a look at the workshop ...have browsed through it but must have missed it Cheers Doug

Hi Doug
You don't see some of Telmos changes because he uses a footswitch to change things - not sure whether it's the registration or OTS. He's an approachable guy - why not ask him. As far as I know he's not a member here but he's on another music site Yamaha Keyboard Enthusiasts Login
You'll probably have to join the site to contact him via private message
Cheers
Spike
PS if you don't want to contact him or join the other site I will contact him for you.

Telmo has not been posting on YKE for quite a while, I think he's possibly concentrating more on his YouTube channel and I can't blame him to be honest. He deserved far more praise for his songs than he received on YKE. I've known him since the T2 days, very nice bloke. He uses quite a few samples as well as internal and edited sounds, mainly the atmospheric WAV sample packs you can purchase for sound effects which you can easily import to the multi pads. I'm sure he'll tell you more if you can get a message to him.
When you watch a Tyros video on YouTube, always keep a look out for a green song light and play light lit or the play light under the audio recorder. If these are not lit you know the players not playing over pre recorded backing as way too many do.

Hi Craig...Once I can get my head around the structure of how to set up one of these theme songs ..I will be able to get on with something I want to achive.....ever since I first saw Mark Wilburn play the Batman theme...I would like to at least play one of the movie themes....James Bond 007 Theme....is probally is the one I start with.....as I have said before..... I need education in orchestra instruments to fill the overlays with...I suppose full orchestra sheet music would tell what instrument are being used and when....Cheers Doug
