Default DERVISH D (Vangelis) - 09-06-2011, 01:33 PM

Hi Folks
Here's the latest song multi-tracked on the Motif XS starting with a blank canvas everything was sequenced or step recorded on 9 tracks.
Hope you like it, criticisms welcome as ever.

Spike, OK so its Vangelis......
Get out of here, that was amazing.
So embracing, steady, stylish, modern, I don't have suitable adjectives for this.
I am beginning to understand what has been said about "multi-tracked"
It feels so cool and in total control.
What was going through your head deciding how to put this one together?? 9 tracks !!!!!!!!!!!
Did you begin with a background or some sort of harmony, a bap.bap.pah.doo.wah sort of thread of a melody or what ????

I am gob smacked.
Well done

Tony

Hi Leo and Tony, thanks for your great comments guys - much appreciated.
To understand how it's put together Tony you first have to understand how the Motif works. It's not an arranger keyboard, it has four modes - voice, performance (the nearest equivalent to a style), pattern and song. Patterns are loop based and songs are linear.
I started to explain what the second two were but it was getting complicated so I'll just say I recorded four tracks of the backing first in pattern mode starting with the riff which come in at measure 8 and includes the build up of the drums. Then the bass and drum tracks . These have to be quantized. Once this is done the patterns are transferred to a song in what they call chain recording which sets the patterns out in a certain order which relates to the chord changes. The song backing is now complete and the melody track is now added. Then comes the track for the cymbals roll, then the grand piano riffs and a couple more pads on two tracks. A final mix and effects added.
This whole lot was then recorded by the Fostex Multi-track recorder the transfered to the Tyros hard drive where it was recorded. This .wav file was then put on the PC and converted to an Mp3.
I may, if I have some spare time (ho ho) write a bit more about recording with workstations. If you have any questions about the above just give me a shout and I'll do my best to explain.
Cheers
Spike

Thanks for the info Spike, I need time to digest and understand what you said.
It seems like a lot of work but the results are amazing.

Hi Spike, You can tell a great deal of work went into this and it was very well played, but did find the melody line a little repetitious...Pam

Hi Pam
Thanks very much for your nice comment - I have to agree with you ref the melody but that's how the original is, maybe I should have shortened it to be less tedium.
Cheers
Spike

Hi Tony
If you go to the Motifator site and look here motifator.com - support it maybe explains the various modes better than I can.
