Default Sleepwalk - 23-05-2012, 11:08 PM

Hi everyone
One for the midweek here
Back to the late 50's early 60's here by Johnny and Santos with versions by many others
Ideal for dragging someone round the floor very slowly ( we used to call it a smooch )
Hopefully relaxing
Barry

Hi Barry
Remember it well, my fav version was by the Shads. Nice guitar sound, did you use the Strat for it?
If I were to be picky I'd say there was too much tremolo at times but you played it well - good on ya!
Cheers
Spike

Watcha Spike many thanks for that
The guitar believe it or not was Aloha hence the tad too much tremolo here and there. Hopefully kept to a minimum as it is applied as second touch and the slightest pressure applies it. The original by Johnny and Santos used a pedal steel and this was the closest I could find. There is also a Jazz guitar in there playing second fiddle so to speak. I may go back and edit it one day but that sort of breaks the live playing element of it so I will probably keep it as it is.
I do seem to have trouble with the recording quality as compared to what comes out of the keyboard. I tried cubase on windows and got nowhere so I use audacity under Linux. I do not seem to have a problem going to mp3 it is actually the capture. Any suggestions will be gratefully accepted
Have a great day
Barry

Hi Barry
Can you talk me through exactly how you record your songs now - I may be able to spot where improve, ents in quality can be found.
Cheers
Spike

Watcha Spike
Many thanks for your interest
For the start as an overview
Prepare all sounds and settings that I want on my tyros. Hit the record button and do a single run through as a live performance. Save the result. Hit the Record button again if I want to add an extra track and select the channel and r1,r2,r3 etc. Save the result again.
Turn on the PC to power up a Yamaha Audiogram 6 USB Audio Interface.
Remove the Headphones that I have been using and plug them into the Yamaha Audiogram 6. Connect the Audiogram 6 to the now vacant headphone socket.
Play the songs through to set gain etc with no clipping. Already at this stage the sound has lost some of it's depth and clarity. Fire up audacity on Ubuntu Linux. Click the record button to test the track for any clipping and adjust as necessary. Finally record the piece to Audacity and save it to disk as a wave file. Audacity will have done a pretty good job of getting what I got from the Audiogram. Finally take it to my main machine and apply any effects that I want i.e. Compression or even Phasing etc. and
export to mp3.
In a nutshell that is it.
Many thanks again
Barry

Hi Barry
Thanks for the info it gives me a better idea of what you do.
My first thought is don't record whilst listening through earphones, they very rarely give the same sound as the onboard audio of the keyboard. they're usually better so post recording will sound worse.
The recording of the song is otherwise how I would do it, ie as a midi.
From this point I do it differently.
If necessary I transfer the midi to a USB stick and plug that into my PC where I make any adjustments to bad notes and add any pitchbending or other effects before saving it back to the USB stick which I then plug back into the Tyros to check - this saves all the setting up messing about getting Cubase to work with the Tyros. I may do this a few times before I get it right.
I then record the midi to the hard drive of the keyboard. It is now a .wav file.
I then export the .wav file to the USB stick plug that into the PC and using Shaungs converter make it into an MP3 file.
It sounds to me like you are involving too many devices which can alter the sound quality individually - the fewer you use the better. We know converting to MP3 does affect the quality so before doing that the quality has to be as high as possible.
Try this, maybe it will help. Let me know how you get on.
Of course if your Tyros doesn't have a hard drive then you can't do it my way in which case Audacity would be used in it's place.
Cheers
Spike

Hi Spike and many thanks for your prompt reply and your suggestions.
Sadly I only have a Tyros 1 so although I have a hard drive and a floppy disc drive it does not do anything ( as far as I am aware ) to create a .wav file so the only way I can get that is an analog to digital conversion externally to the machine.
I suppose that I am looking for something which records exactly what I hear with the headphones. Is there anything that will do that?
Sadly again I never edit anything so that it truly reflects how I play ( abuse ) the thing. All pitch bending etc is done as part of the performance. It's all those gigs in the past. I suppose I still consider myself a performer rather than a recording artist.
Many thanks again Spike
Barry

Hi Barry
I thought the T1 had a hard disc recorder like my T2 - sorry!.
The other way I do recording , which I have to do when using the 3 synths I have is I route them through a Carlsbro Minimix and into a Fostex digital 16 track recorder although I can omit the mixer if I want. I use earphones for this and all the effects can be added after recording if necessary. You actually do the mixing whilst bouncing down the tracks to one or two tracks for final copy.
You can pick up recorders cheaply on ebay Recorders Rewriters | eBay
You'd get away with a 4 track recorder probably although mine has a built in CD recorder. Once recorded you have to convert the song to .wav with the recorder then transfer into your PC to convert to MP3.
Although I'm using earphones while recording the sound does transfer well.
Cheers
Spike
