Crocketts Theme. -
03-10-2008, 05:43 PM
Hi Gang.
Well, thinking back to the two guys who were resposible for a whole new trend in disco's all over the world,........Silk suites with the sleeves rolled up
Crockett & Tubbs were the hero's in "Miami Vice", and I always liked this song by Jan Hammer.
Used a modified style, and I had some fun playing the percussion on the middle section " live " as it were.
From memory, and as usual ,...sequenced ,multi-tracked , and edited, solely on the old T1.
Kind Regards
Gordon

Hi Gordon
WOW this is superb !! I know the song very well i have a copy on 12" vinyl which i bought in the eighties.
I blasted the midi through my Tyros with my headphones on and watched all the channels as you played , lots going on . You've found some great synth sounds which matched very close to the original , who needs to spend thousands of pounds on a T3 when the 'owld T1 sounds this good
Did you make the style from scratch as i can't work out how you managed to get the saw lead on track 15 to do what it does ? It sounds like an appreggiator was used?
Some very clever work here Gordon and i absolutely loved the song , your version was bang on the money mate and from memory pheww you have a touch of musical genius i think it has to be said

Hi Andy.
Thanks a bunch mate for those great comments
I found the style on the net, its an old commercial one, and it was mostly strings in the background, and a bit lame to be honest.
I did a bit of choping and changing using the assembly function, to improve the variations, and also substituted some synth voices instead of the strings.
( No idea what an appregiator is I'm afraid ).
Better not post the style due to copyright, but I'll gladly send it to you if you would like it !
Cheers for now
Gordon

Hi Gordon
Cheers for the info , here's an explanation of an appreggiator Arpeggiator - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia if you look at the bottom of the page there is an audio sample of a rave sound made by an appreggiator you will have to add the active x at the top when it pops up..
Most synths have apps and it a great way to get that stabby synth sound which is like that one on track 15 of your midi .Spikes motif has thousands of them built in . an app can be manipulated with effect knobs on synths which makes the variations of sounds infinate.
cheers
andy

Hi Gordon
I know I always say this, but this is your best ever!
As Andy stated, who needs a T3 when the T1 sounds this good. I love Jan Hammer's stuff, and still have the LP with this track on somewhere.
To be honest, I still can't get my head around how you guys construct and adapt styles. I tend to use them to get the drum beat I want, and then add my own backing, which is nowhere near as good as the onboard ones but then I don't normally do covers.
There is so much interesting stuff going on in this track. How do you begin with something like this? Do you put the drum track down first, and then add the synth bass and so on, or do you work in a different way? I loaded the midi in Sonar, as I wanted to hear how the tune would sound through the T2. All the tracks are perfectly quantised, in other words, the score reads like a professional piece of music with all notes exactly where they should be, (whereas mine are usually all over the place! ). Is this down to the style used? Embedded in the midi, it says something about 'Hands On Software', so I presume this is the style supplier you mentioned?
Sorry for all the questions, but this is one aspect of multi-tracking I've never been able to get my head around, intros, endings, fill-ins, variations etc. Hopefully one day someone might be able to submit a tutorial on how you guys construct these things, as I feel I'm missing out on some of the features available on our keyboards.
Arpeggiators is an other area I'm in the dark on. Will we ever get them on arranger keyboards, or is it just a synth feature?
Anyway, another first class performance by you Gordon, and god knows how you do this stuff from memory. I'd be scratching my head after 8 bars! What's the secret for remembering all the individual parts? You must really immerse yourself in the tune beforehand. However you do it, it's a real gift.
Nearly forgot, you nailed that real Hammeresque guitar solo part around the half way mark, but I reckon it should have been a bit louder on the mp3 as it was lost a bit in the mix, but still brilliant.
Yep, another multi-tracked beauty!
Cheers
Paul

Hey Gordon!
Great stuff here. As you know, I also do all playing, editing, and etc. in the T1 solely. It's amazing how guys like us are so similar. I didn't know what an
arpeggiator was either! (Although I did have a good idea what it was.)
This is first class stuff you've made here, as it usually is from you. There's definitely a lot going on in this tune and you seemed to have nailed it.
The only 2 things I would mention about it is that it drags on a little too long, (and that of course is not your fault), and I do agree with Paul about the guitar getting kind of lost in the background. You've done such a nice job on it, that it's a shame it wasn't a little more out in front.
Again, ....... great stuff!

Hi Paul.
First of all, a million thanks for those great comments
Spike put me on to a great site for custom styles,....a lot of them are a bit hit & miss, as the problem is,you can only preview the midi, and not the style, so you are never quite sure what you are going to get ?
I do like to compile My own styles, much as you said, by using an existing drum track as a basis, but on this style, I basically just changed most of the voices from strings to synths, re did the bass track, then played with the volumes and panning etc. I also made My own variations by transposing various parts from the existing ones .
Hopefully its just channels 8-16 that sound quantised, as everything on 1-8 is Me
Anyhow, thanks a bunch one again Paul.
Kind Regards
Gordon

Hi Krazy.
Yeh,....we do seem to be very similar, ( except I'm a lot better looking of course )
Thanks Mate for your honest and constructive critique !!.
I was a little frustrated with the solo guitar volume, it was kind of the last track before recording the melody, and I must have had the volumes of everything else too high !!, I tried to reduce all the other levels, but that messed up the fade out, so I decided to leave well enough alone ( which is a shame , as it's a brilliant solo  ) ha ha !.
Now, on the other hand, if you really wanted to help out a buddy, you could use your brilliant editing skills to do a little "Krazy re-mix " ( hint hint )
Kind Regards
Gordon

Sure Gordon. I'd love to! I wouldn't want to re-mix anything else because you did such a fine job already. BUT!!! I would love to bring the guitar out front though.
Shall I?

Hello again Gordon!
If you haven't already done so, check your e-mail. I fixed the guitar and mailed the midi back to you about 4 hours ago. (Around 7:30pm or so).
Hope you like it!
I'd like to hear how the re-mix sounds in mp3 form now.
