Default Driftin' - 24-10-2008, 03:43 PM

Hi Everone
I return with one of the Shadows hits.
Quick record then added sax c/melody and mute guitar pad. The pitch down at the start of verse lines was done after too by just adding the one note on it's own channel as operating the PB wheel was difficult when changing chords.
Here's the Mp3 4shared.com - online file sharing and storage - download Driftin'.MP3
Hope you enjoy it, comments welcome good, bad or ugly
Cheers
Spike

Hi Spike.

Boy, you sure find some obscure songs,....didn't recognise this one at all ?

Anyhow,....first of all, pat on the back for a first class job on the production and editing !

Nice tight performance, and I particularly liked the breaks,....super beat !!

You must be getting old however, as it seems you forgot to hook your pinkie around the tremelo arm ha ha !

Great all round job Spike !!

Kind Regards
Gordon

Yeah, love all those old Shads (erm, Drifters) tunes. Nice one, Spike! We used to do this back in the day (who didn't?).

Gordon, this tune was from Cliff Richard's first album, "Cliff!" where his backiing band The Drifters had a couple of instrumental features, the other one I think was called Jet Black (for Jet Harris, the bass player). The album was absolutely huge in the UK. The group later had to change their name to The Shadows as the American vocal group The Drifters threatened lawsuits, etc. I can't figure to this day why Cliff was never the big name in the US as he was in the UK.

Hi Gordon
Thanks for your great comments mate, I'm surprised you didn't know this one, mind you I think you were maybe still in short trousers then and I'm afraid the old pinkie is getting lazy with age

Hi Howie
Thanks for giving it a listen and commenting.
I always thought Jet Black came well after they changed their name.
I think Cliff never made it big in the 'states because there were so many big names there at that time - there wasn't room for another quivering lip

Cheers guys
Spike

Thumbs up Re: Driftin' - 25-10-2008, 02:02 PM

Good one Spike

Trademark Spike guitar playing with that added sax giving it a bit of a Duane Eddy feel. Perfectly played, arranged and balanced.
Think I remember this one from a previous upload but don't recall the Shads original. Just checked my own Shads collection of about 350 tracks and it ain't there. Just wondering if this goes back to pre Hank days?

Anyway, thoroughly enjoyed it Spike, my kinda stuff.

Regards

Will

Hi Will
I've done a bit of digging and Howie is right - Driftin' was the B side of Jet Black the first instrumental made by Cliff Richard and the Shadows in 1959, neither was a hit at the time. They'd only just reformed from The Drifters in early '59,so it was probably Hanks first instrumental. It's all here The Shadows - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
It was one of my earlier uploads, played on the PSR2000 so many would have heard it before so thanks for your nice comments Will and glad you weren't put off from the first time.
Cheers
Spike

Spike you old fart.....I knew I could count on you for a great SHADOWS sound. and yes...I seem to recall that first Cliff album where the Shadows were featured on a couple of tracks. Thats back when they were called the Rockin' Drifters. Great memories and truly outstanding playing on your part Spike. It's good to hear.

Hi George
How nice to hear from you - trust you are well. Thank you for listening and your nice comments about Driftin' . I don't recollect the Rockin' Drifters, they were certainly called The Drifters until they were sued by the American vocal group of the same name. As you say , much water under the bridge since then
Cheers
Spike

Hi Spike....I'm well thank you. I seem to remember an LP I had of Cliff's back in '58 and maybe I'm wrong but I would swear the Shads were listed on the LP as the Rockin' Drifters. I know the old grey matter plays funny tricks on one and maybe thats what I think I remember. LOL
Good to hear from you Spike
