When I fall in love

Hi friends

I have been away for a while but now I can see that the board is beginning to thrive like the old days. I am very happy for this - and to be able to say hello again to a lot of old friends.

I use the occasion to upload my version of an old Nat King Cole classic - When I fall in love. But certainly not played in the "usual" manner...

However, I personally consider this to be one of my best performances ever (which unfortunately does not say too much

) - so please let me know if you like it or not...

Hi Torben,

It been a while.

For me, I wouldn't agree that this is your "best" performance, but it is one that I enjoyed very much. I have enjoyed many of your songs in the past and I especially enjoy your renditions of classical pieces. Vienna, City of Dreams (I think is its full name) is still my favourite of your performances.

It certainly is a great style you used for this one!

Hi Torben - I have listened to many of your tracks and I have enjoyed them all. However, I would have to agree with Peter - I dont really feel that this is one of your "best" performances.

However, maybe you meant to say that it was one of your most enjoyable performances

as I can picture you rocking back and forth on your stool, foot tapping and really enjoying the big sound you have going on.

For me, the best bit is the trumpet part towards the end - tremendous use of pitch bend/portamento/legato (you'll have to tell me how you achieve that effect) - a really authentic sound.

I think the one thing that distracts me is the shortened first line of the melody - its just not what you expect to hear - but hey, there's nothing wrong with adapting them.

Great recording Toben - keep it up.

Wow.. After listening to one of your other posts, I decided to check out some more.. This is very impressive!. It really 'cooks'. I haven't heard the original version for so long, I can't remember exactly where you stuck to melody or ad-libbed it a bit. Your soloing fits in with the original melody so well. Excellent.

If you care to explain your process, mental and physical, it would be very much appreciated. I really do admire how different people approach a piece of music..

There are still many styles I haven't explored. I can harmony switch come in. You certainly made a very good use of the style.. Your performance of melody, changing Vars, and OTS - makes a very smooth piece..

Dear friends

thanks for your comments - and sorry for taking so long time to respond.

Two comments:

1.When I improvise, I improvise, meaning that I could not play the same thing twice. I follow my mood, happiness, sorrow, whatever ... And tend to stick with the most common chords in the song.

And then of course - to make a good improvisation you've got to know the piece forwards and backwards ... to feel "free" ...

2. I always try to play the "instruments" on my KB as they are supposed to be played for real. Staccato, legato or so. Sometimes I succeed, sometimes I do not ...
