Default I Believe - 06-08-2009, 10:02 AM

Hi Folks, Using the Ethereal Ballad style on the Ty3, here's my version of I Believe, There is a new choral and Vocal expansion oack available at $199.95, which I personally think is very pricey, on this recording I used the standard onboard voices and think they sound just as good, hope you enjoy it...Pam

This sounds very nice ...

A suggestion ... anyway to make the "I believe" phrase a little more legato? For me, it's sounding a little too "staccato" .... For example, using the sustaining pedal?

Hi Pam
Very nice version. I can see where Tim is coming from here on the occasional short note - could easily be rectified on board or with Cubase by increasing the gate time. I might have a go at it! I also thought the glissando harp didn't add anything as it was random.
Having said all that I enjoyed listening to it and it was a pleasant change to hear this song played at this pace. - nice one!
Cheers
Spike

Just put the midi into Cubase Pam and tweaked it a bit, cut out the glissando - it's quite a big job to increase the length of all those notes as they are on 3 tracks in places. I did notice when I played it on the T2 that none of the melody voices were built in and it obviously substituted others and only 2 of the style voices were on the T2. I could also hear a swirling sound which I couldn't hear on the Mp3. Just proves why we need Mp3s linked. I'm sure it sounded different again and of course best on the T3.
I think that at times the way we listen to them on the site doesn't do the song justice.
Cheers
Spike

Hi Spike, Thanks for the comments, and for taking the time to run it through Cucase, did you do that with the MP3 or the midi, because I think that you can do all the altering in the mixer on the Tyros, anyway pleased it wasn't too bad to listen to...Pam

Did it with the midi Pam - yes you can alter a midi on the T3 in Song Creator tab to page 1-16 and alter the values but it's easier in Cubase

A general suggestion .... and recommendation ...

The keyboard is a keyboard ...

However, something to think about ...

IF you are playing, say, the tenor sax on the keyboard ... You almost have to PRETEND you are playing the real thing ... OH how easy it is to start off playing the sax on the keyboard as if you were playing the piano. It doesn't work, and, it actually comes across as if it really doesn't work ... In otherwords, it doesn't really sound like a sax player ... It sounds like somebody playing the keyboard with a sax sound. Does that make sense?

After you record your stuff ... Go back, and listen to it, several times ... However, this time, listen to it objectively and play the devil's advocate, asking, "Am I convinced that sounds like a sax player playing the sax OR does it sound like a keyboard player playing the keyboard with a sax sound?"

This is important to note. WHY? The more you can get it to sound like a real player, the more you are going to convince the listener. Although, we will never get it to sound like a real player, we sure as heck can get it quite close ... and that's really the goal.

Also, I think it was Spike, that suggested something to me: "Don't forget to let your wind players BREATHE!"

Again ... try and add realism to your pieces. Don't just play the keyboard and use different sounds....

Not aimed towards YOU, Pam, just a general recommendation.

Quite right Tim, and another tip is always have a wind instrument on monophonic, never have the harmony switched on unless you are trying to create a duet of two instruments and even then use the function sparingly, and never play a chord.
There is the odd exception like a harmonica .
I seem to remember a previous post on this subject.
Cheers
