Default Pulstar - 03-09-2009, 03:00 PM

Hi Folks
Here is todays work - my version of Vangelis' Pulstar (but not all of it)
Multi-tracked on the Motif XS6
For the techies, in Pattern Mode I made 2 patterns of the drum track (Std Kit 1) and bass track (Unison) which I copied to 4 sections, the bass track for each of these sections was made different to reflect the chord changes. These were all 4 measure (bar) loops.
I then chained recorded them together in the right order and copied the whole thing over to a song . In song mode I then added the melody track (Punchy Drone, the strings track (Analogue Sweep) and the organ track (Bollinger), mixed the lot in the on-board mixer, transfered to the Tyros to make the .wav file, then on to the PC to convert to Mp3.
Mp3 here 4shared.com - online file sharing and storage - download Pulstar.mp3
No midi (you could'nt play it even if I made one).
Comments welcome as ever

Cheers
Spike

Thumbs up Re: Pulstar - 03-09-2009, 07:33 PM

Another good one Spike.

We've got a Vangelis revival going on up in the Highlands then?

Good to hear this one again, remember it well.

A bit slower and a slightly different groove from the original but once again some great sounds coming from the Motif.

Would liked to have heard a few of those Vangelis brass stabs to add a little and finish it off and really disappointed you left out the speaking clock and went for the fade out ending.

Still another good days work. Great stuff.

Regards

Will

Hi Will
Thanks for taking the time to listen to this, I appreciate your remarks.
I've got a confession to make - I've never heard Vangelis play this - only ever heard a cover by some unknown musician on a cheap set of Synthesiser discs I bought at the Co-op, so I've played it from memory and didn't realise there was so much more to it. This cover version was pretty monotonous so I tried to add a bit of life to it. Must have a listen to the real thing next time.
It was good fun doing it and I get a little further along the learning curve each time.
Thanks again for your input - isn't it about time we heard some more music from you?
Cheers mate
Spike
PS the Motif has some great voices but the speaking clock must be missing from mine

Hi Spike, I listened to this 4 times, so I did give it a go, but try as I might, I just couldn't get to grips with this one, found it very monotonous, and no change of voice didn't help, must be an age thing, but appreciate your effforts, for a good try, sorry...Pam

No problem Pam, thanks for listening anyway. The project was more about learning how to put this song together with the Motif as no style was involved than the song itself and it had to be done with pattern loops for each track. Yes the cover version which I based this on was even more monotonous. Synth tunes don't appeal to everyone although I am a big fan of Vangelis, JMJ etc. I'm not convinced it's an age thing - more about what you find enjoyable.
Cheers
Spike

Hi Spike.

Really enjoyed listening to that. I've always liked a bit of Vangelis - although I always thought that he needed a guitar player. (He should have employed Van Halen on guitar - although I could be accused of being a bit biased there!).

Good cover version.

Paul

Hi Paul
Thanks for listening and taking the time to comment. Van Halen meets Vangelis? now there's a thought.........yes I think that could sound pretty good although the synth purists would argue that synth music has no room for 'real' instruments - I don't buy that!
The choice of song came second to trying to master the black art of creating patterns, editing them, recording a chain of them and then after converting to a song adding extra tracks. The manual isn't that good so it was mostly trial and error with the emphasis on the latter.
Cheers
Spike

Yeah, they could have called themselves "The Van Drivers" or "The White Van Men" - or then again, perhaps not....

I remember there was a lot of angst amongst Van Halen fans when Eddie played keyboards on a few tracks on "1984" and subsequent albums. Shock, horror, sacriledge! Personally I thought it was inspired - and I'm still doing my best to copy the concept now.

You are right about the manual for the XS. I guess that the information is there but it doesn't really flow. Somewhere on line I found some PDF files of power user tools for drum track construction on the XS which I found sort of helpful. It was much better written and therefore user friendly, but unfortunately I can't remember which site I found them on. I think it was probably the US yamaha site. If I stumble across it I'll let you know.

Hi Paul
I don't have a problem recording drum tracks usually and I have a pretty good book called Rhythm Programming by Mark Roberts, although it's based on old Cubase software the basics are still good.
Cheers
