Default We Gotta Get Outa this place - 16-10-2009, 05:13 PM

Hi Everyone
I've tried this at the suggestion of one of our members - it's an old hit by The Animals. Planned it on a bit of paper first -
I made a loop of the main drum part on the T2, joined all the loops up with Cubasis and added the drum rolls etc. Did the same with the bass line. (Don't laugh but I was humming the tune in the background while doing this). Both heavily quantized. I now have 2 midi tracks (drums and bass) which I record into 2 tracks of the Fostex MR16. I then recorded an organ track and a guitar track on the Fostex while the bass and drum tracks were playing. That completed the backing tracks, all I had to do then was play the sax melody and a second sax into another 2 tracks and bounce the lot down into stereo tracks then into an Mp3.
Not quite sure if I got all the melody right as I had to match it with the backing and it was from memory ( a feat in itself today for me )
The growl sax was supposed to imitate Eric Burdons rough voice.
Hope you like - critique welcome as always

Hi Spike, Sounds like a lot of work to produce a song, but I appreciate you couldn't have got that opening drum part just on a keyboard alone, thought it was great, the only thing I would change is when the main part ( we got to get etc) a change of voice would enhance it, just my opinion, a great song though, Bravo...Pam

Hi Pam
Thanks for your nice comments - you could do the intro drums on the keyboard but it would mean a lot more work, it's easier to write them in with Cubase and yes the voice change would have been better - that would have meant another track and I was getting PO by the end
Thanks
Spike

Hi Spike.

I did a version of this myself a while back, and coming up with the style variations wasn't easy, so I know how much work has gone into this one.

Nice crisp bass line,....the 3 taps on the cymbal just right for the intro build up, and great use of the "Hammond " for the backing riffs.

OK, so the melody was'nt spot on, but that really didnt matter, as you captured the mood perfectly.

My only critique would be to have built up the " yeeeeh's " before the chorus, but thats a quick fix !

Nice job mate !

Regards
Gordon

Hi Gordon
It's funny how I remember things once I'm reminded - should have listened to a record before doing this one, at my age I really shouldn't rely on my memory. You're right of course although I tried to do the yeeeh part with the sax it probably wasn't like a voice, incidentally the saxes were from the Korg M3.
Thanks for the great comments Gordon - didn't realise you'd done this one, must listen to it (on ypko?)
Cheers
Spike

Nice job Spike.. I'm amazed you could do this from memory.. We used to play this song in our first band also..

When I do a cover, I go to YouTube, and check out various versions of the song.. I use a program called audio hijack to make an mp3 from the video.. I listen to the various versions, and try to incorporate aspects which I like into my version.

Hi Mark
Thanks for your comment, glad you like it. I don't read music so everything I play is 'from memory' - a feat in itself at times. Never thought of Youtube so thanks for the tip.
Cheers
Spike
