Default SomeWhere Over the Rainbow - 20-10-2009, 03:42 AM

Rainbow 23.mp3 - File Shared from Box.net - Free Online File Storage

Over the Rainbow recording notes

I found some sheet music. I altered the chords, In the beginning of the song, in a couple of measures they were changing every 1/4 note. (bringing too much movement too soon (IMHO) - so I altered them a bit, to change on the half notes..

There was also a chord in the bridge which didn't feel right, so I altered that too..

SEE RAINBOW REGIONS jpg - Rainbow regions.jpg - File Shared from Box.net - Free Online File Storage

I recorded the left hand chords only into Logic using the Pop New Age style.
Inside Logic, I cleaned up the chords , quantizing to 1/4 notes. Since the Tyros style generator will supply the 'human' timing errors..

I needed a beginning and end. So I moved to the Chart Ballad style. I recorded the Tyros performance intro which was four bars long. I then stripped the drum track out of that..

At the end of the song. I put a tag ending on of left hand chords (I repeated "if birds fly over the rainbow, why then oh why can't I?). Then I changed styles again to Chart ballad, Playing the root chord (Eb) - so the ending supplied a little 4 chord progression..

Next I record the performance of the PopNewAge. I decided to try recording style main variations and play the melody. Since the style will be changing the OTS, I'll get different voices. This changes will enhance my performance, cause I'll play little fills. I recorded the melody, last..

Hi Mark, Not one of my favourite songs, but you have made a marvelous job of this one, superb voicing, which is far from the shmaltzy version I'm used to...Pam

Hi Mark
You certainly put a lot of work into making your songs, I admire the 'insight' you have into what is going on in the background of songs and to be able to put that into a recording takes talent.
Like Pam it's not one of my favourite songs by a long way but you made it interesting and held me to the end.
Bravo!
Cheers
Spike

Hi Mark.

Well,....seems like I'm in the minority here, but this is one of my all time favourites , and because of that, I was'nt sure if I would like a " messed about with " version,??

Pleased to report, your arrangement was great, and even your improv didnt stray too far from the melody line, and worked very well.

I thought your choice of style mix, and voices, were perfect for the song

Regards
Gordon

Thanks for the remarks everybody. Yes, it is hard to record some one's favorite song. You want to make it different, but not too much.

I have on occasion heard covers of my favorite songs, which really disturbed me. I felt it was almost sacrilegious.. Recently a series of albums of Beatles music came out, called something like "Beatles Tuned to a Natural E". They took all the original Beatles master records, and made a collage mash up.. Taking a vocal part from one song, and horn lines from another, manipulating voices etc.. So it almost sounded like new material..

It interested me at first, and then I got very put off by it. Of course that's part of the beauty of music. One person might love it, and another hate it..

Mark,
I can't say I understand all the trouble you went to but the result was great. Only recently I went to the net to get the chords to this one and ended up with 5 different versions. I was hoping to get the Eva cassidy Chords but they were'nt there. I'll study your version now

Hi Mark

All I can say is that you've done a terrific work on this one! The song is SO trivial but you made it live again...

Great job!

Hi Mark,

Loved your rendition of ' Somewhere Over The rainbow '.
I would have liked to hear more strings in your composition though.
Give it that 'Mantovani' feel

Great song, well played.
Thanks
John
