Default I Feel Love - 05-12-2009, 10:01 AM

Hi Folks
This is my version of Donna Summers hit of 1977, many cover versions were made Blondie, Whitney houston, Madonna......
The original lasts for over 7 minutes and one of the covers for nearly 9 minutes mostly due to the synth bods showing their prowess in the middle. I cut most of that out as I'm not in their league.
I started with a style which I thought was a decent basis, changed the drum kit and some of the drum hits, I imported a fill-in for Var B, I changed a lot of the velocities of the drums and then made my own break (a bass drum roll).
The bass line and pad were deleted and I made my own. The reverb was increased.
The song was recorded as a quick record (quite a few times!) then choir and mute guitar were added and a short piece of multipad in the break. The song was then transferred to Cubase where the bass and pad were removed for 4 bars then an acoustic bass and pad inserted for 4 bars which then reverted to the original style.
Transfered back to the T2 and a final mix done. The midi was then converted to .wav and then converted to Mp3 with Shaungs.
Nearly 3 days work in total
If you have a T2 then the midi will sound best with that but the Mp3 should be ok although not quite as clear as the midi. It'll be bad through the PC .
There are probably many mistakes in it.
There ya go - hope you like it. Feel free to criticise.
Cheers
Spike

Hi Spike.

Terrific driving beat to the style, and it was a perfect match for the song I thought.

Cant do anything about it "going on a bit " as that's how the original was intended to be,...a great disco dance number .

Good use of voices, and the break worked very well .

All in all, a well produced, and well arranged performance

Regards
Gordon

Hi Gordon
Thanks very much mate, glad you liked it. I guess when it came out we weren't bothered how long it was, we could disco all night couldn't we?
Cheers
Spike

Hi Spike

This is good.. I can hear the work that went into it. What I like is by bringing the song into a DAW, you altered/manipulated the song so that it doesn't sound like a factory generated style.

My observations - the song hits you with one intensity level, and stays there through most of the song. The melody, the sequenced riff, and the bass, all are demanding your attention..So it is a little overwhelming to the listener, (all three parts too intense for too much of the time)

Since the song is long, (it's supposed to be), you might try altering the main sequencer riff by adding seperate controller tracks for brightness, resonance, panning, and send level to DSP. Instead of just stopping the sequenced line, you could do a volume or expression fade out. You could try with fading in/out in sections. This would give the riff more variety. Perhaps even a program change to help define a section. (This is 'iffy' cause changing the main sequencer riff too much might interrupt continuity). This signature riff is part of the song's personality.

This riff, however brings up an interesting point. It is very persistent. However, you as composer, performer don't always have to 'state' the obvious. You can 'imply' the part, by changing the velocities of some notes. You might try cutting some out. The listener's brain, will put them back in, cause it recognizes the pattern. Subconsciously, we like to find continuity, in things, both in music and in the world in general, cause it keeps us stable, but too much of the same, becomes boring, and our brain wants to move on.. So we should strive for continuity, but we need change to keep us interested.

The shortform rule: (which I learned from editing disco songs) never let more than four bars go by without something changing.

The melody, sequenced riff and bass are all bright. (In addition to above suggestion regarding sequencer riff, you might try experimenting with the lead melody patch. Try going to a different instrument for a section or two also try a darker sound. I think the melody line in 2nd verse is a bit too loud and bright.

Did you play melody harmonies, or use Tyros generated harmony? You could experiment with re-assigning the harmonies to two or three different MIDI channels using different patches. You could also play with panning.. Since you are using a DAW, you can actually get more instrument sounds out of Tyros then normally available, by sending to the two ports. Using this trick you can get more 'depth of field' in your song, with patch selection, panning, level, and effects sends etc.

The bass - it's a key component to the song. Try doubling the bass to another MIDI channel with a deeper more standard bass sound. Keep the resonant bass part you originally started with and lower the volume (Pan, effect send?) it, so it's effect comes in/out of listeners attention.

The drums could perhaps be louder (part is excellent though). Bring them up, make a bit dryer?. (if you have the tracks, assign the snare, to a different track and play with reverb send too), but leave kik and hats more in your face and present. Maybe a couple of more drum breaks...)

If you have an empty track (pad track 5 - 8) put the claps on that, and move, pan them in a break section. I love what sounded like the drum part was spliced/overdubbed towards end.. The snare got more present, sounded like it went to a different patch. More of that in the song too.

Well that's my 1 pound, and 79 pence worth. (is that the correct English currency?)

You did a lot of good work here, and it shows.... This is all a matter of taste however. One would have to try this to determine if it is worth the effort.

Mark

Hi Mark
Thanks for listening to this and taking the time to suggest ways to improve it. Your suggestions are interesting and I will take them on board and experiment when I get a minute.
No I didn't use the harmony, I had 2 different voices on 2 different tracks but playing the same notes. Regarding the intensity level, I tried to have it fairly sedate for the first verse, then doubled the voices for the second verse then following a fairly quiet middle bit gave it some wellie with doubled voices and extra drum parts and repeated it with the bass drum roll to break it up.
My preferred method of using a sequencer is I save the song to a USB stick then plug the stick into the PC and load the song, modify it, save it back to the stick as a different file then into the T2 to play it . I find this easier than messing round with channels, tracks, midi ports and other black magic. It works for me so I stick to it.
Anyway thanks again for your critique, much appreciated.
Cheers
Spike

Hi Spike, Three days work eh?, well it paid off, as you know I don't use these gadgets to enhance my playing, just the onboard sequencer, but in this case it paid off, and you produced an incredible piece of work, BTW, what is a DAW?...Pam

Thanks for the nice comments Pam I'm glad you liked it.
A DAW is a Digital Audio Workstation ie sequencing software like Cubase, Cakewalk, Sonar etc it can do virtually what the onboard sequencer of the keyboard can do only quicker and in most cases easier

Hi Spike,

It's amazing how much of the original 'Tyros sound' is lost at the conversion from .aud to.wav stage. I wonder if all keyboards suffer from this? You hear this lovely rich sound on the keyboard, and by the time you get to mp3 stage, the sound's really suffered. I notice tunes that mainly use style backing tracks don't seem to suffer as much as the ones where we've built up the song using our own choice of voices.

Anyway to the song, which I reckon you've done an admirable job on. My only gripe, and it's not your fault, is that I thought the bass needed some extra depth to it, as the whole song sits on this one riff. The problem is, I think the Tyros, (don't know about the T3), is quite weak on bass synth sounds. You then tweak one up, but by the time it gets to mp3 stage it's lost that oomph again.

Anyway, nice to hear you exploring another genre and this worked really well as an instrumental.

Cheers

Paul
