Default Pipes and Drums - 04-01-2013, 03:44 PM

Hi folks
I've just completed an experiment to see if I can make a realistic Bagpipe sound.
The method is explained here in the section called Behind the Song
Pipes & drums
The link to the song is there too but here it is again
https://www.box.com/s/931m40eg8vbtwbilndhk
It's not really an original composition but that was the only place I could list it.
Comments will be very welcome - I need some fresh ears to tell me whether I'm on the right track so to speak.
Cheers
Spike

Hi Spike

well you want a second opinion, the drone's are bad, not real to me.
the bagpipe it self is good, not real yet ,but its close
i have for you the Fred Morrison plugin bagpipes with 4 bagpipes
border pipe, highland pipe, small pipe, and Uilleann Pipe, use and try it with flstudio
its sound close to the real bagpipe if you want it give me a sign.
i have two songs post here some while ago with the morrison plugin "Amzing Grace" and "Scotsbrave" you can hear it,maybe its a waste of money what you bought for you Motif (the bagpipe sounds)
Take care

Romeo

Hi Romeo
Thanks for listening and giving me your opinion. The drones in your songs are of the sort which adds a bass drone, found on some pipes but not all, and are unrealistically loud.
I have played in a pipe band and one of my friends who still plays the pipes advised me on the drones and balance of sounds in my song, according to him it's correct. I will give him a link to your songs to see what he says about them.
However I'm grateful for your opinion in that it tells me that not all ears hear it the same and that there may be some work to do yet.
The plug in will be great please send it.
Cheers
Spike

Hi Spike
I enjoyed your Pipes and Drums I thought the Pipes actually sounded good. The sound of feet running would make it more realistic though.
Tis a real strange thing when you see a Piper on his own in the middle of nowhere playing. It is like his own version of the blues. I sometimes have a go at pipes and playing the drone myself. Gets a bit boring though so what I do is I record it over and over using the pitch control and have it off-key very slightly until you get hundreds of the little bleepers and you develop a reel. The same technique that studio's use for strings. Now if you got enough of em all going at the same time you could create a mass exodus effect with all Sassenachs running South! Lol.
Have a great week Spike
Barry

Hi Barry
Thanks for your great comments mate. After I recorded this , if you read the 'behind the song' thread I did copy tracks and altered them . I have since experimented copying the tracks further and de-tuning also duplicating the drum track and delaying the timing slightly. Both give you the 'massed' pipes and drums but you have to watch you don't overdo it.
Sassenachs running from Scotland? - the place would be half empty.
PS Sassenachs are lowlanders not English!
Cheers
Spike

Hey, Spike.

I don't have that much experience with bagpipes, but it sounded ok. I do know that there is a "chord" played with the lead pipe (those are the "drones"?) and that the chord stays the same.

I like the bagpipe sound and would like to use it sometime, but the drones are hard to hide when one changes chords in the song.

I worked at an Experian phone center for a short time, and the music on the headset (between calls) had a bagpipe with it and sounded good even when the chord was different from the bagpipe.

Liked it...........................................Pat

Hi Pat
Thanks for listening and your comments.
The bagpipes are tuned to play in A, the drones are A and E and are sounded permanently, they cannot be changed other than fine tuning and are therefore in the background regardless of what chord is played. Of course the bagpipes are meant to be played solo or with other pipes accompanied by drums so chords don't enter the equation. The trick when playing them as a voice is not to have the drones too loud but they must still be there for the true sound.
The GM bagpipes are able to be played polyphonic which is impossible for the real pipes.
To have a true sound of pipes the drones have to be put on a separate track to the chanter (melody) and balanced.
Cheers
Spike
