Default I'd Count The Stars - 08-09-2009, 11:41 PM

(NOTE - the original link has been replaced with a corrected current mix of this song)

http://www.box.net/shared/ok192niyiy

Here is a song I was working on today. There is a melody and lyrics, and after the singer is done, I will upload it.. So I improvised on top of it (a bit too much). There are flaws here, you can hear patch changes while I'm in the middle of a note. I'm still trying to figure out what will be the best procedure to follow. Unlike most of my fellow arrangers here, I am attempting to use the Tyros as a compositional adjunct to a DAW.

I am amazed at what some of you people do, playing this live. And I'm sure with time, I will become more adept at it.. I still get overwhelmed at the amount of sonic options you have at your fingertips.

I recorded this into the Tyros sequencer. Per Spike's advice I recorded in three passes. 1st pass, was left hand chords, and I played the intro, variations, and end. On 2nd pass, I recorded the multi pads. I made a multi pad with harp arpeggio, guitar picking 1-1, guitar picking 1-2, and then bongo pitchfall.

On the 3rd pass I recorded right hand playing 3 voices at different times. When I created the style I used (modified R&B) I had it switching patches for the 4 different OTS - which in turn were triggered by the the Main Variations I used.

I am only used to working in recording studios. I never play 'live'. So this is a challenge for me.. I've become very used to building a track at a time.
So what I guess I need to do is to create the intro, variations, end. etc. to not have right hand voice changes, (or perhaps I use the registration freeze option).

Then on a seperate pass I can add the different melodies, strings, horn, etc.

I have spent some time, building a 'performance patch'. The different sections, OTS, registrations, etc. And it's amazing because you can really take a song anywhere with all this power at your command. I did quite a bit of recording into Tyros sequencer.

Unfortunately I end up with too many tiny 'glitches'. (ie hitting a bum note right before left hand chord, Tyros interprets it wrong. When I do that do I need to go into the edit list and fix each track?.. (individually fix, the bass, the left hand chords, guitar or piano if they played a beat on the "1"?

Or put it another way - Is the first time you record a pass, what Tyros uses to generate all it's parts?.

Could I just record the left hand chord changes first, and then go back on a 2nd pass and record pushing song section buttons?

Thank you again everyone for your insight..

Sorry having technical problems at box.net I uploaded it, and the link is all distorted and pitch wobbles, so I took it down, waiting to hear from them.. I'll upload again when problem is sorted out.

Hi Angelonyc,Very ambitious, goodness you make really hard work of producing a song, I must admit it's not really my cup of tea, It didn't seem to go anywhere, but well played and a good effort...Pam

Go to [DIGITAL RECORDING/SONG CREATOR] and tab to page [1-16]. Select the channel which you want to edit using [BUTTON F] scroll down with [BUTTON B and across [BUTTON D or E] highlight the event you want to edit - if it's the M/B/T (particularly the Tick) then alter the event value by using the [DATA ENTRY] wheel or [BUTTONS 4 & 5]. Don't forget to SAVE.

So what I guess I need to do is to create the intro, variations, end. etc. to not have right hand voice changes, (or perhaps I use the registration freeze option).
You still have 16 tracks to play with in Intros and Endings, there's nothing to stop you using all the 'melody' tracks (1-8) by putting a different voice on each one. That would be when you were recording though. The built in intros only use tracks 9-16 because they are the tracks which have chord recognition.

Or put it another way - Is the first time you record a pass, what Tyros uses to generate all it's parts?. Not sure what you mean here. The Tyros only arms the tracks in use when recording. When you add extra tracks each one is armed as required by simultaneously pressing [BUTTONS 1-8 according to which track you are recording) and RECORD button.

Could I just record the left hand chord changes first, and then go back on a 2nd pass and record pushing song section buttons? If I were you I'd record some drums first to maintain a rhythm, you can always delete it afterwards, then have this playing while you play the chords - with no style playing you can choose any track for this but make sure the drums are on CH10 and bass on CH11. With no style being used then the sequencer becomes 16 tracks, if you use a style the you are limited to tracks 1-8 for playing to the style

Now to the song, firstly it didn't seem to have a structure but as I understand it it was an experiment so was unimportant. I would definitely ditch the trumpet - it was too harsh for the ambience of the song. On the positive side you had some nice riffs going and the sounds were consistent with the type of music you were trying to produce. I think the harpeggio would have sounded better at half the speed.
All in all I think you produced a very nice overall sound which I'm sure will improve with practice
Spike

I quite liked it - laid back and mellow. I'll be interested to hear it once you have recorded the singer doing his/her bit.
