Default How"s & What's in Using a Sequencer in Live Performance? - 19-07-2011, 04:03 AM

Good day to all

i have this problem how to play live using just the keyboard and a sequencer (im not sure that"s the correct term). i really haven't used one and i used to play in a band, so my mate asked me if we can do it like that. Any suggestions on what brand/model should i get and what are the other stuff that i will need. I only own a Korg N5Ex, mixer, and laptop. Your help is much appreciated.

cheers!

Hi
There are two types of sequencer - software like Cubase, Sonar, Cakewalk and sequencers built into keyboards like the Yamaha Tyros.
Presumably you want to play to a backing provided by a sequencer so you have a couple of choices 1) buy an arranger keyboard and either play to the built in styles or record a midi file of the backing you want and then play the melody along to it. On the high end keyboards you can record in audio and play along to that.
2) install sequencing software into your laptop and record your backing into the software using the N5ex and then play along to that. This is the more difficult option.
Let us know which option you would take and we can probably help you further
Cheers

Hi spike

Thanks for the quick response. With option 1 I think I cant afford to buy an arranger kbd at the moment is there a cheaper option? With option 2 do I need to buy an interface hardware?
Cheers

Hi Marty
If you use the N5ex to record songs with sequencing software then you will need a midi interface. This is a box with inputs from your midi sockets on the N5ex and an output to your USB port on the laptop. You will need to install the appropriate driver so that the N5ex is recognised by the software.
I would suggest buying an entry level Cubase or Cakewalk (Google them) although there is free sequencing software out there if you look. Computer Music magazine give away their software on every DVD which is attached to each magazine. You will also need an instrument definition file for the software obtainable as a download from Korg.
The method of assigning midi channels is well documented in the Korg manual.
When you've got things organised come back with any further questions and we'll try to help.
I use my N5ex to control a Korg Radias rack
Cheers

hi spike

i downloaded a trial of cubase elements just to see if its alright. i already had trouble hearing the MIDI recording because it doesnt come out thru the speakers or the keyboard and i cant also hear the metronome. i did setup the devices and all as the tutorial said but still without success.

regarding the instrument definition file, i cant seem to locate that file in the Korg website.

i found a Music Creator 3 software and hardware in a garage sale for $15 and i managed to connect my kbd with the provided MIDI Connector, the software is outdated but i managed to make it work. will this be a good idea or do i really need to get the cubase and Sonar?

hope you can give me your insights regarding this. Cheers!

Hi Marty
It sounds like your Cubase trial was not set up right if you got no sound.
The 'outdated' software you got is fine - much of Cubase and Sonar is really for the pro recording studio and has features which are rarely used (hence the price). You should be able to do what you want with MC3, maybe their website has the instrument definition file. You can make your own (it's only a text file of a list of instruments) but it's a long process. You may find some info on it here. YAMAHA Keyboard - Home
Once you've mastered recording to MC3 you will know whether it's worth upgrading to Sonar etc.
I only use Cubase/Sonar for editing midi files already recorded on the keyboard.
Cheers

Hi Marty,

Stick with it.

Once you've finally got everything working you'll never look back. I totally agree with Spike about Cubasis' entry-level sequencer being adequate for your needs. The most basic of software sequencers will probably have more functions that you might ever need. There's certainly no need for the majority of users to upgrade to the latest versions.

Keep us posted!

Cheers

Paul
